It was founded 1997 on the initiative of the Zodiak Presents association and its choreographers. The association had been their common production community since 1986. BOXING SHADOWS/Varjonyrkkeilyä

Boxing Shadows is a match of three male dancers and a photographer with some trends and role models characteristic of our times. This work presents four viewpoints in making the choices for building the male identity and in meeting the requirements of role models. Boxing Shadows challenges all the prevailing role models - with the Don Quijote mentality. Jyrki Haapala, Simo Kellokumpu and Carl Knif have created their solos independently based on the common themes and bring them to the world created by Tero Puha. Jyrki Haapala has graduated as a dancer and has been working as a dancer and a choreographer in Finland, Holland and Belgium. Simo Kellokumpu has graduated as a choreographer in 2003 and works as a freelance choreographer and dancer. Carl Knif has graduated as a dancer in 2000. He has danced, for example, in the works of Marjo Kuusela, Jenni Kivelä and Petri Kekoni. Tero Puha is a photo artist residing in London. He often deals with the male identities, body image and sexuality in his photos. Puha’s works can also be seen in the collections of the Kiasma Museum and the Japanese Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts.

Viivana (Speedy)

London-based Finnish choreographer and filmmaker Satu Tuomisto makes her home debut with her group work Speedy. This lively quartet explores the countless manifestations of speed and the dancers’ ability to stretch speed to its limits. The velocity of human bodies collides and collaborates with a rhythmic soundscape, created during the physical working process. Dancers throw themselves to the alluring temptation of speed and inertia in this performance of ultimate bodily control.
Satu Tuomisto graduated in 2000 from Middlesex University with a BA (Hons) Dance Studies degree. She runs her own company Satu Tuomisto Dance in London, UK. Tuomisto’s stage works, including Something About Us (2005), Toxic (2004), Long Lost Friend (2003) and Slightly Edgy Chick (2002) have been presented at various dance theatres in London, e.g. Robin Howard Dance Theatre at The Place, The Bloomsbury Theatre and The Bull Arts Centre. Tuomisto has also studied film, video and television and worked as camera operator and video editor in various freelance projects. She is also known for her dance film work and education projects.

Varjojen huone (Room of Shadows)

In her first group work Room of Shadows, dancer-choreographer Mammu Rankanen continues her research into Japanese concepts of time and space with lighting designer Tomi Humalisto. This journey began with Rankanen’s previous solo work Black at Zodiak in 2003. The original meaning of the Japanese concept ma is a silent pause in music. Oku on the other hand means the inside of something, such as a merchant’s back room or the depths of one’s mind. These two concepts play an important role in Room of Shadows, which explores the boundary between the inner self and the world.
Mammu Rankanen received her MA in Dance at the Theatre Academy of Finland in 1992. She has worked as a dancer in numerous productions and is a member of Tommi Kitti & Co. Rankanen has created six solo choreographies since 1993, including the triptych Albino, Momento Rojo and Black with her twin sister, visual artist Mimmu Rankanen. In addition to her dance work, Mammu Rankanen works as a teacher of astanga yoga in Helsinki.

Anna-Maija Terävä’s Fighting Mind examines the paradoxes of mind and body through the use of choreographed and improvised movement, speech and video.

Deadly After Dark

Choreographer Arja Tiili’s new work combines absurd and black humor with terror and horror. Deadly after Dark has been inspired by horror literature and movies, and it approaches the themes of terror and fear through gothic, romance, social taboos, madness and fairy tales. Movement vocabulary is created through the method of ’rewinding’ – mixing up the alphabet and creating illogicality. Is there such a thing as illogical movement?
Arja Tiili is a productive and multitalented choreographer who often combines different genres and ideas in her work. She graduated as a dancer from the Swedish Balletschool in 1991 and has studied choreography at the Theatre Academy of Finland since 1999. Her previous work at Zodiak was Camp No 5 in 2003. She has also created choreographies for KokoTheatre, Subfrau, Sun Ballet, URB-festival, Helsinki Dance Company and Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth.

Where is Krishna?

Where is Krishna? is a collective dance work. The creative team, including dancers Terhi Vaimala and Jonna Eiskonen, visual artist Aku Korhonen, lighting designer Jukka Huitila and musician Juuso Hannukainen, exposed themselves to Indian cultural traditions (kathak-dance, music, theatre, storytelling) and the colorful aura of the social reality in India (exhausting visuality, population, wealth and poverty) for one month. The aim was to create electric friction and innovation in their artistic work and thinking through cultural submergence. But will an artistically motivated journey only create an ethnic caricature?
Terhi Vaimala received her MA in Dance from the Theatre Academy of Finland in 2003. She has worked as a dancer with e.g. Jyrki Karttunen, Liisa Risu and Hanna Pajala. Where is Krishna? is Vaimala’s first professional choreography. She has studied choreography at SNDO in Amsterdam, and at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, USA.
Jonna Eiskonen received her MA in Dance from the Theatre Academy of Finland in 2002. She has danced with e.g. Jyrki Karttunen, Alpo Aaltokoski, Tommi Kitti and Liisa Risu.

Musician Juuso Hannukainen has played with Don Johnson Big Band, Fi-reggae allstars and Rinneradio. He has also collaborated with several dance and new circus productions, including Fritt Fall (2005) by Rinneradio and Circo Aereo.

House of Mrs Wilson

"I have thought of myself as a house, full of events, movement, words, images and scenes. Even if a house is cleaned there are things that remain. Something inside me tells me what is appropriate for the stage. Why must something happen when usually there is nothing going on? Or you might notice as you stand in the spotlight in front of an audience that what you have in mind might not be important enough."
Jenni Kivelä (b. 1974) graduated from the Finnish Theatre Academy Department of Dance Art as a choreographer in 2002. Arja Tiili ger Freak-a-Zo!

Freak-a-Zo! is a rockfable-like journey into the world of abnormality. The work explores our impulses to celebrate the abnormal, our tragic compulsion to desire it and then to demystify and destroy it. One of the themes of Freak-a-Zo! is obsession.
The characteristic traits of the works by choreographer Arja Tiili, such as references to popular culture, absurd humour and elements of surprise, can be found in this new creation. Arja Tiili is known for her style of breaking the boundaries between different genres. Essential for her creations are satire and black humour combined with original movement material. She doesn’t hesitate to combine pop culture with high culture, electric boogie with classical ballet and different dance styles in a boisterous mix.
Tiili's previous work at Zodiak was Deadly After Dark in 2006. She has also created works for e.g. Dance Theatre Minimi, Helsinki Dance Company, Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth and the Sun Ballet Company. Tiili is the artistic director and co-founder of the independent freelance festival INDIE Art Factory and the artistic director of her Pain Productions -dance group.
